Technical Overview

The 8620-series RAID controller (dual-core ROC, PCIe 4.0 x8 host interface, 24 internal PCIe 4.0 lanes) presents unique scaling challenges when driving 8–24 NVMe SSDs in RAID-10. Unlike HBA passthrough, the ROC performs parity calculations, striping, and cache management in firmware, introducing latency variance under mixed read/write workloads.

Key Constraints

  • PCIe Lane Budget: 24 lanes → max 12× x4 NVMe (or 24× x2 with bifurcation). Oversubscription beyond 2:1 degrades tail latency.
  • Queue Depth Saturation: Each SSD exposes 64K queues; ROC aggregates to 1024 outstanding commands per virtual drive. Beyond QD=256, controller firmware becomes bottleneck.
  • Write Hole Exposure: RAID-10 lacks parity; power loss during stripe update corrupts both mirrors. 8620’s 4 GB supercap-backed cache + PLP (Power Loss Protection) on SSDs required.
