Engineering breakdown of Scaling BGP Anycast Routing Nodes (5926). Bare-metal hardware performance requires isolated kernel parameters, tuned sysctl values, and careful IRQ affinity to achieve line-rate packet processing across globally distributed PoPs.
Architecture Foundations
Our anycast fabric leverages Equal-Cost Multi-Path (ECMP) at the spine layer, with each node advertising identical /24 prefixes via BGP. Health checks are performed by a custom daemon that withdraws routes upon service degradation, ensuring sub-second failover.
We deployed a hierarchical BGP design: core routers run FRR with route-reflector clusters, edge nodes use GoBGP for programmatic control. Anycast health is driven by a gRPC-based controller that manipulates BGP communities in real-time.
Benchmark Results
Testing across 12 global PoPs showed 99.999% availability with <50ms failover. Throughput scaled linearly to 400Gbps per node using 100G NICs with RSS and RPS tuned.
