Optimizing PostgreSQL Connection Pooling with PgBouncer (9157)

Technical Overview

Connection pooling is critical for high-throughput PostgreSQL workloads. PgBouncer (v1.21+) offers lightweight, transaction-level pooling with minimal overhead. This article dissects kernel-level tuning, pool sizing algorithms, and real-world benchmarks from Votion Cloud's bare-metal clusters.

Why PgBouncer?

  • Reduces backend process fork/exec overhead
  • Enables 10k+ concurrent client connections with 100-200 PostgreSQL backends
  • Supports prepared statement caching across pooled connections

Kernel & Network Tuning

On bare-metal, we isolate CPU cores for PgBouncer and PostgreSQL using taskset and cgroups. Key sysctl parameters:

net.core.somaxconn = 65535
net.ipv4.tcp_max_syn_backlog = 65535
net.ipv4.tcp_tw_reuse = 1
net.ipv4.ip_local_port_range = 1024 65535
fs.file-max = 1000000

These prevent connection drops under burst traffic.

Observability & Alerting

Export PgBouncer stats via SHOW STATS and SHOW POOLS to Prometheus using the pgbouncer_exporter. Critical alerts:

  • pgbouncer_pool_usage > 85% for 5m
  • pgbouncer_wait_time_seconds > 0.1
  • pgbouncer_server_lifetime_0 > 0 (indicates backend churn)
