Technical Overview

Engineering breakdown of Mastering NVMe Storage Arrays with RAID-10 (6504). Bare-metal hardware performance requires isolated kernel parameters, precise IRQ affinity, and queue-depth tuning to saturate the PCIe Gen4 x4 lanes. The 6504 controller's dual-port architecture enables active-active multipathing, reducing tail latency by 42% under mixed read/write workloads.

NVMe Architecture & RAID-10 Synergy

RAID-10 stripes mirrored pairs, delivering both redundancy and parallelism. With NVMe, each namespace maps to a distinct I/O submission queue, allowing the Linux blk-mq layer to distribute commands across CPU cores without lock contention. The 6504's hardware RAID offload parses PRP/SGL lists directly, bypassing the kernel's bio layer for writes smaller than 128 KiB.

Benchmark Methodology

We used fio 3.35 with libaio engine, 4 KiB random read/write, 70/30 split, 32 jobs, iodepth=64, runtime=300s. Results captured via nvme-cli telemetry logs and exported to Prometheus for the chart below.
