Hardening HTTP/3 QUIC Header Compression (5964)

Technical Overview

Engineering breakdown of Hardening HTTP/3 QUIC Header Compression (5964). Bare-metal hardware performance requires isolated kernel parameters, but the real attack surface lives in the QPACK dynamic table management. RFC 9204 defines the compression scheme, yet implementation flaws in table synchronization, insertion count wrapping, and blocked stream handling create amplification vectors.

Threat Model

  • Table Poisoning: Malicious encoder forces decoder into excessive memory allocation via crafted header blocks
  • Insertion Count Wraparound: 62-bit space exhaustion triggers state desync
  • Blocked Stream DoS: HEADERS frames referencing unacknowledged entries stall connection flow control
  • Side-Channel Leakage: Compression ratio reveals header presence/absence (CRIME/BREACH class)

Hardening Primitives

We enforce three invariants at the kernel bypass layer:

1. MAX_DYNAMIC_TABLE_CAPACITY = 16 KiB (configurable via sysctl net.quic.qpack.max_table)
2. MAX_BLOCKED_STREAMS = 100 per connection
3. INSERTION_COUNT_WINDOW = 2^32 (sliding acknowledgment window)

These map directly to Votion's quic-hardening eBPF program set, deployed as a TC classifier on ingress NIC queues.
