Technical Overview

DNSSEC key rollover, as specified in RFC 6875, introduces operational complexity when deployed across globally distributed edge nodes. At Votion Cloud, we treat key rollover as a first-class control-plane operation: each edge PoP runs a dedicated dnssec-key-manager sidecar that coordinates with our central KeySigningService via gRPC over mutual TLS.

Critical hardening measures include:

Pre-publish & Double-Signature Phases: Automated via cron jobs with jitter to avoid thundering-herd on parent zone operators.
Algorithm Agility: Support for RSASHA256, ECDSAP256SHA256, and Ed25519 with runtime selection per zone policy.
Emergency Rollback: One-click revocation using pre-generated CDS/CDNSKEY deletion records stored in encrypted etcd.
Observability: Real-time telemetry on key state (published, active, retired) exported via Prometheus dnssec_key_state gauge.

Bare-metal hardware performance requires isolated kernel parameters: net.core.somaxconn=8192, net.ipv4.tcp_tw_reuse=1, and CPU pinning of the unbound validator threads to dedicated cores.
