WebAssembly (WASM) has emerged as the dominant runtime for serverless edge functions due to its near-native performance, sub-millisecond cold starts, and strong isolation guarantees. At Votion Cloud, we process 9,881+ concurrent function invocations per second across 12 global points of presence (PoPs) using a custom WASM runtime built on wasmtime with WASI preview2 support.
Isolation Architecture
Each function executes in a dedicated component-model sandbox with capability-based access control. The runtime enforces:
Linear memory bounds via guard pages (4KB granularity)
System call interception through wasi:cli/environment and wasi:io/streams virtualization
Network namespace isolation per tenant using eBPF-based socket filtering
Filesystem virtualization with per-invocation overlayfs mounts
This design eliminates container overhead while providing stronger guarantees than traditional process isolation. Benchmark data shows 99.9th percentile cold start < 1.2ms for 64KB modules.
