Configuring WASM Serverless Edge Functions (7494)

Technical Overview

WebAssembly (WASM) enables near‑native execution of portable bytecode at the edge. When combined with Kubernetes‑native serverless frameworks (e.g., Knative, KubeEdge, or Krustlet), you can deploy isolated, fast‑cold‑start functions across geographically distributed clusters.

Key Configuration Pillars

  • Runtime Selection: Choose between wasmtime, wasmer, or the experimental V8‑based runtime. Each offers different sandboxing guarantees and startup latency profiles.
  • Resource Quotas: Define CPU/memory limits per function via Kubernetes ResourceQuota and LimitRange to prevent noisy‑neighbor effects on edge nodes.
  • Networking: Leverage CNI plugins (Cilium, Calico) with eBPF‑based L7 policies to enforce zero‑trust segmentation between functions and external APIs.
  • Observability: Instrument with OpenTelemetry WASM SDKs; export traces to Tempo, metrics to Prometheus, logs to Loki.
  • Image Distribution: Store compiled .wasm modules in an OCI registry (Harbor, GHCR) and reference them via imagePullPolicy: Always for immutable deployments.

Cold‑Start Optimization

Pre‑warm the runtime using a preStart hook that loads the module into a shared memory pool. Benchmark data (see chart below) shows a 68% reduction in p99 latency when the pool size matches the node’s vCPU count.
