HTTP/3 replaces TCP with QUIC, moving congestion control and loss recovery into user space. Header compression in QUIC is performed by QPACK (RFC 9204), which uses a static table and a dynamic table with a maximum size negotiated via the SETTINGS_QPACK_MAX_TABLE_CAPACITY parameter (default 0). On bare‑metal, the dynamic table resides in process memory, so its size directly impacts CPU cache pressure and NIC DMA buffers.
Key Kernel Parameters
net.core.rmem_max / net.core.wmem_max – raise to ≥ 4 MiB to accommodate larger QUIC packets.
net.ipv4.udp_mem – increase the UDP memory pressure thresholds.
net.core.netdev_max_backlog – set to 30000 for high‑pps workloads.
These sysctls are applied via sysctl -p /etc/sysctl.d/99-quic.conf on each node.
