Technical Overview

Engineering breakdown of Benchmarking HTTP/3 QUIC Header Compression (4127). Bare-metal hardware performance requires isolated kernel parameters, tuned NIC queues, and deterministic CPU pinning. This article walks through the test harness, the QPACK dynamic table sizing, and the impact of packet loss on header compression efficiency.

Test Environment

  • CPU: AMD EPYC 7763 (64 cores, 2.45 GHz base)
  • RAM: 256 GiB DDR4‑3200 ECC
  • NIC: Mellanox ConnectX‑6 Dx 100 GbE (SR‑IOV enabled)
  • OS: Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, kernel 6.5 with CONFIG_NET_UDP_TUNNEL=Y
  • QUIC Stack: quiche 0.18.0 (Rust) and msquic 2.2 (C)

Methodology

We generate synthetic HTTP/3 traffic using h3load with a custom header set that stresses the QPACK encoder: 30 KB of request headers per stream, 200 concurrent streams, and a 5 % packet loss injection via tc qdisc netem loss 5%. Each run lasts 60 seconds; we capture per‑stream header bytes on‑wire, decoder state transitions, and CPU cycles per packet via perf stat -e cycles,instructions,cache-misses.
