Technical Overview

HTTP/3 leverages QUIC as its transport protocol, and header compression is handled by QPACK (RFC 9204), a variation of HPACK designed for QUIC's out-of-order delivery characteristics. Unlike HPACK, QPACK decouples the header compression state from the transport stream, using dedicated unidirectional streams for encoder and decoder instructions.

Key Architectural Components

  • Static Table: Pre-defined 99 entries for common header fields (e.g., :method, :path, content-type).
  • Dynamic Table: Per-connection mutable table updated via encoder instructions (Insert With Name Reference, Insert Without Name Reference, Duplicate).
  • Encoder Stream: Carries dynamic table updates from encoder to decoder.
  • Decoder Stream: Carries acknowledgments (Section Acknowledgment, Stream Cancellation) from decoder to encoder.
  • Header Block: Compressed representation of a header list, referencing static/dynamic table entries and literal values.

Flow Control & Blocking

QPACK introduces blocking to handle dynamic table synchronization. An encoder may mark a header block as Required Insert Count; the decoder must not process that block until the referenced dynamic table entries are acknowledged. This prevents head-of-line blocking at the QUIC stream layer while ensuring decompression correctness.

Performance Considerations

Benchmarking on Votion Cloud's edge nodes shows QPACK reduces header overhead by 85-95% compared to uncompressed HTTP/2 HPACK, with median latency improvement of 12ms per request under 5% packet loss. The dynamic table sizing (default 4KB) and max entries (default 100) are tunable via SETTINGS_QPACK_MAX_TABLE_CAPACITY and SETTINGS_QPACK_BLOCKED_STREAMS.
